Meet Cyii Cheng, the fresh face featured in this year’s Chinese New Year campaign. Based in Kuala Lumpur, the model is also known for her own style, serving major Y2K-inspired looks on and off the Instagram grid. Read on as Cyii Cheng talks style, upcycling and why she’s looking forward to Chinese New Year.
“I LIKE COLOURS. I LIKE TO BE BOLD. A LITTLE BIT PROVOCATIVE. MY STYLE ISN’T PARTICULARLY DEFINED IN ONE GENRE. IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW I’M FEELING ON THAT DAY. SOMETIMES EVEN THE WEATHER!”
On certain days, I feel like wearing really high waisted baggy pants and a tank top. Or some days I’m like, “I feel really confident about my legs today” so I’ll wear a really nice miniskirt.
If I get bored with a piece, like a denim skirt, I’ll cut it up and turn it into a bralette or a belt or something.
“THE BEST THING ABOUT UPCYCLING FOR ME IS SEEING NEW LIFE IN SOMETHING THAT YOU ALREADY SEE THE VALUE IN.”
ON CHINESE NEW YEAR
We have very strong Chinese New Year traditions that we make ourselves—I find comfort in that. It would just be spending time with my family mostly. 2021 was terrible [because of lockdown restrictions] so I look forward to things going back to the same.
