When you make clothes to stand the test of time, your sights are always on the future. We’ve long been advocates for sustainability—and our ambitions today are only bolder. Our plans and partnerships are focused on three main pillars: climate, consumption and community. We’re not shy about confronting the clothing industry’s effect on the planet. We’re working towards progress behind the scenes. But with you involved, we can do more and we can do better. Every great movement begins with a conversation. Want to learn more? See our goals and progress in our latest Sustainability Report.
Confronting Climate Change
There’s no denying that the fashion industry plays a part in today’s climate crisis. It’s essential that we adopt new industry practices that stress the planet less, from reducing energy use, emissions and waste, to taking a smarter, more responsible approach to water use and conservation. Not only do we tackle these issues head-on, we share our approaches with the entire industry. Let’s take a look at how we’re changing the game for good.
SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY
Without our people, our products wouldn’t exist. We are working to support every person in our supply chain, and the communities where we operate, by protecting and improving apparel workers’ well-being.
Empower Our Workers Over a decade ago, we set up our Worker Well-being initiative to support financial empowerment, safety, health and gender equality among the workers who make our products around the world. We continue to offer employee programs and resources to build skills and foster inclusivity.
Promote Diversity, Gender Equity and Inclusion In 2020, we took an honest look at who makes up our teams to improve diversity at every level, both in our organization and in those of our suppliers. We examined pay equity, created resource groups to drive conversations that will lead to meaningful structural changes and continued our support of other organizations and nonprofits through financial support and volunteer efforts.
Amplify the Voices of Others The Levi’s® brand has been a part of culture and cultural conversations for decades. We use our reach to advocate for and support organizations addressing the most pressing social issues of today. A few of the causes near and dear to our heart and yours: voting, gun violence prevention, LGBTQIA+ equality, paid family leave, reproductive rights and environmental conservation.
Changing Consumption Habits
We’re committed to making better choices and better clothes. Because when we make better, you can buy better. And what you buy better, you can wear longer, so you can buy less and waste less. We launched our Buy Better, Wear Longer campaign in 2021—a mantra and movement that encourages more conscious purchasing decisions. Most importantly, as we look at our own resource consumption, we’re making strides to improve the circularity of our products, pioneering innovations that can scale to drive positive change across the industry. Designing clothes for circularity means using recyclable and renewable materials that can be used again, and limits the use of resources in the production process. Check out how we’re preparing to be circular-ready.
Levi's® Sustainability
WE’RE ON A MISSION TO CHANGE THE CLOTHING INDUSTRY. FOR GOOD.
There’s no hiding it: The apparel industry has a tremendous impact on the environment. As a brand that plays a role in this, it’s on us to do everything we can to create the styles you love, but do so in a way that still respects our planet. It’s an approach best summed by our mantra: Buy better. Wear longer. We’ll make products that are sourced in better ways, from better materials, crafted at the highest quality and made to be extremely durable.
And you? Just keep wearing the products you love for as long as possible. And look… we haven’t always gotten it right. Becoming a more sustainable clothing brand is important to us, and it’s a work in progress. We’ve made some great strides in some areas and we’re pushing ourselves to do better in others, but we’re in it for the long haul. And we hope you’ll join us.
BETTER CLOTHES. BETTER CHOICES. BETTER PLANET.
We focus on the innovations that make our jeans and all other products as durable as ever - materials crafted with thoughtful quality from sourcing to finishing, that help create a bond between you and the products you buy. With our innovations in Water‹Less® technology and other production techniques, we’re using less resources and making less waste. Our philosophy on durability extends beyond just everyday use. Levi’s® products are made to be worn and get better with age.
MADE TO STAND THE TEST OF TIME.
We have sustainable practices and methods that help make our products stand the test of time, and everything we make is rigorously tested for durability. Our Tailor Shop can repair or redesign your clothing to literally last a lifetime. In the US, we also introduced SecondHand in 2020 as a way to further demonstrate this commitment to longevity by extending the life of our own products even further and offering customers the vintage styles they love.
WE’VE MADE SOME GREAT PROGRESS.
Sustainability is woven into everything we do, and we’ve made some great progress across a number of areas: 4.2 billion litres of water saved since introducing Water‹Less® in 2011. 9.6 billion litres of water reused and recycled. 75% of our cotton now comes from more sustainable sources. 65% of our products are currently made in factories that run our Worker Well-being programs.
BUT THERE’S STILL WORK TO BE DONE.
We’re working towards industry-leading targets including: 100% sustainably sourced cotton by 2025. 100% renewable energy in owned & operated facilities by 2025. 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in our supply chain. 50% reduction of water use in manufacturing in water-stressed areas by 2030. 80% of products made in Worker Well-being facilities by 2020.
